GREENVILLE — An erratic offensive effort was but a minor impediment to East Carolina as the Pirates applied a smothering defense to handily dispatch of Division II foe Lees-McRae College 85-44 on Wednesday night.

Lees-McRae (3-4) made only 17 of 62 shots from the field (27.4%) and not a single LMC player scored in double figures as ECU (6-6) hounded the Bobcats into 24 turnovers.

Erroyl Bing scored 17 points to lead a group of five ECU players in double figures. Kenyatta Brown added 14, Fred Primus notched 12 in an effective reserve role, Travis Holcomb-Faye tallied 11 and Moussa Badiane chipped in 10.

Bing also led the Pirates in rebounding with 13, while Badiane blocked 7 shots to bring his total for the season to 34, just 12 shy of the East Carolina single-season record.

Brandon Ehret scored eight points to lead the Bobcats.

After an 8-8 tie with 13:10 left in the first half, the Pirates began to assert themselves and seized control of the game with an 18-3 run. With Bing and Brown supplying much of the offensive punch, ECU led by 19 going into the locker room, 42-23.

Lees-McRae was unable to mount a serious challenge after the break as the Pirates (6-6) sailed to a 50-25 advantage within the first five minutes.

In a season of streaks, the win was ECU's fourth straight after breaking out of a losing six-game funk. Before the skid, the Pirates had opened their season with impressive back-to-back wins over Rutgers and Northwestern.

Barring a remarkable performance on both ends of the court, the current streak will be in dire jeopardy of heading back in the other direction when East Carolina hosts a more dangerous cat species on Saturday — the Cincinnati Bearcats. It will mark the Pirates' official on-court dive into the Conference USA basketball wars.
