ECU alum leads raid on
Minges
GREENVILLE — UNC-Greensboro
coach and East Carolina grad Mike DeMent found just what he was looking
for when he returned to his alma mater Tuesday evening — a solid road
win.
Ricky Hickman scored 24
points and Kevin Oleksiak added a career-high 23 points to pace the
Spartans to a 78-70 win over ECU in Minges Coliseum's Williams Arena.
“This is a big win for
us,” said Dement. “We haven’t played very well on the road thus far so
hopefully this will give us a big confidence boost, particularly with
such a young team. We hit some big shots down the stretch; Hickman
banked one and Oleksiak banked another. (David) McClenny got in there
and knocked two down. It was just a great effort all around and a nice
win.”
Dement, who graduated from
ECU in 1976 and was a Pirate assistant coach in 1985-86, is in his
second stint at the helm of the UNC-G program after serving the last
nine seasons as
head coach at Southern Methodist.
“I want to give Greensboro
a lot of credit for hitting the necessary shots when they had to, and
for playing very well,” said ECU coach Ricky Stokes. “Good players make
good shots, and they definitely made some good shots tonight.”
The Pirates (3-3) scored
the first six points of the non-conference game. The Spartans (5-3) then
went on a 14-2 run to take a six-point lead midway through the first
half, but East Carolina responded with a 17-4 run of its own to move
back ahead.
The teams were tied 25-25
at the break.
Greensboro shot 63 percent
from the floor in the second half, knocking down 17-of-27, as Hickman
scored 15 of his points in the final 7:34.
Kyle Hines added 15 points
for the Spartans.
Sam Hinnant led East
Carolina with 18 points, Courtney Captain scored 13, and Tom Hammonds
and Corey Rouse each had 11.
East Carolina's next game
is Saturday, when it hosts Western Carolina in Minges Coliseum's Williams
Arena at 7 p.m.
