G-W shoots down Pirates

GREENVILLE — Gardner-Webb
pounced on East Carolina early and displayed uncanny accuracy from the
field and free throw line over the course of the game to hand the
Pirates' their first lost Tuesday night.
Pivotman Simon Conn scored
16 of his 25 points in the second half to pace the Runnin' Bulldogs, who
held off several rallies to prevail 77-72 in Minges Coliseum's Williams
Arena.
Gardner-Webb (1-1) jumped
to a 30-9 lead, but East Carolina (1-1) trimmed the margin to two with
less than three minutes to play.
The Bulldogs were 52% from
the field (24-46) — including 53% from behind the arc (7-13) — and
nailed 92% of their foul shots (22-of-24). They made all eight free
throws in the final minute to seal the win.
Chris Gash added 21 points
and Brian Bender scored 19 for Gardner-Webb (1-1), which suffered a
last-second loss at defending national champion North Carolina on
Saturday.
The Bulldogs' starting
backcourt of T.J. McCullough and Tim Jennings combined for just one
point in the game, but had 11 assists and just one turnover.
Tyronne Beale led East
Carolina with 21 points. Corey Rouse had 13 points and 11 rebounds for
the Pirates, while Sam Hinnant added 11 points.
The Pirates' next game is
Saturday,
when they host Wofford at 5 p.m. Fans presenting a ticket from the ECU-UAB
football game which kicks off at noon that day in Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium
will be admitted to the basketball game free of charge, subject to
availability of seats.
