Rouse's big game not enough for Pirates

BIRMINGHAM — Corey Rouse had a double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds but it wasn't enough to prevent East Carolina's eighth straight road defeat as the Pirates fell 72-64 at UAB on Saturday night.

Sam Hinnant added 14 points for ECU (7-15, 1-8 Conference USA) and Jeremy Ingram scored 13 as the Pirates played without point guard Japhet McNeil and forward Jonathan Hart, who were suspended earlier in the week by coach Ricky Stokes for violating team rules.

The Blazers led 35-25 after scoring the first seven points of the second half but the Pirates closed the gap to 52-48 on a dunk by Rouse. UAB spurted again on a jumper by Marvett McDonald, who scored 15 of his 18 points in the second half, and three free throws by Brandon Tobias.

Wen Mukubu and Paul Delaney, III, had 12 points each for UAB (17-5, 7-2) and Lawrence Kinnard added 10.

Courtney Captain and Tom Hammonds each had five turnovers among ECU's total of 26. The Blazers had 13 steals, which helped offset the Pirates' 41-26 command in rebounding. Captain was active on the boards with seven rebounds.

Rouse made 8 of 11 shots from the field but as a team ECU shot just 42.6 percent from the floor (23 of 54) as Captain struggled to a 2-for-12 performance.

The Pirates try to end their road woes at Rice on Wednesday beginning at 8:05 p.m.
