GREENVILLE — Memphis evened its American Athletic Conference series at East Carolina on Saturday with a 7-3 win.
The third and deciding contest in the three-game set is at noon today.
A three-run homer by Chris Carrier capped the scoring in a decisive five-run third inning for the Tigers, who improved to 27-24 overall and 7-13 in the AAC.
Trent Turner had a two-run single in the fourth as Memphis extended its lead to 7-0.
The Pirates (26-25, 5-15) scored three runs in the eighth inning. Travis Watkins and Spencer Brickhouse started ECU’s scoring frame with singles. Turner Brown was retired at first, allowing the runners to move up. Bryce Harman’s sacrifice fly brought in the first run for the Pirates.
Drew Henrickson tripled to score Brickhouse and cut Memphis lead to 7-2. Pinch hitter Brady Lloyd singled to drive in Henrickson.
Watkins, Brickhouse and Brown had two hits each. Brown had a pair of doubles.
ECU freshman right-hander Trey Benton (3-4) started and went three innings. He allowed three hits and six runs, four earned, while walking two and striking out one.
Memphis starter Colton Hathcock (3-3) pitched seven scoreless innings.
Tyler Webb was 3-for-3 with a double and scored two runs for the visitors.
