GREENVILLE — East Carolina won its second straight American Athletic Conference series on Sunday, holding off Tulane, 5-3.
Eric Tyler was 3-for-4 with two RBIs for the Pirates. Wesley Phillips was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs for ECU (24-21, 4-11 AAC).
Tyler and Phillips contributed to a three-run fourth inning that put the hosts ahead to stay.
Kody Hoese gave the Green Wave (22-23, 9-6) the initial lead with an RBI double in the top of the fourth.
Tyler started the bottom of the fourth with a single to left. Travis Watkins doubled down the left field line to put runners at second and third.
Turner Brown’s RBI single to left tied the score. Bryant Packard’s sacrifice bunt moved Brown and Watkins into scoring position. Both were brought in on a double down the left field line by Phillips for a 3-1 Pirates lead.
A walk to Spencer Brickhouse started a two-run seventh for ECU. Brady Lloyd came in as a pinch runner.
Bryce Harman singled through the right side to put runners at first and second. A double steal allowed both to come home on a single through the left side by Tyler for a 5-1 Pirates lead.
Grant Witherspoon and Hunter Williams had RBI singles in the ninth as the Wave closed within 5-3 before ECU reliever Matt Bridges closed the game with a fly to center.
Freshman lefty Jake Agnos (2-2) started for the Pirates and went seven and one-third innings. Agnos scattered four hits and allowed one run, which was earned. He walked five and struck out 10.
Bridges yielded four hits over the final one and two-thirds innings. He allowed two runs, both earned, while striking out two without a walk.
Sam Bjorngjeld (3-3) took the loss.
ECU outhit the Wave, 11-8.
The Pirates have a midweek break, resuming action at South Florida on Friday at 6:30 p.m. for the opener of a three-game AAC series.
