HOUSTON — East Carolina saw several leads dissolve as Houston scored four runs in the sixth inning on Sunday for a 9-6 American Athletic Conference win and a series sweep.
After 17-3 and 8-1 losses, the Pirates played their most competitive game of the three-game set, taking leads of 3-0, 5-2 and 6-5 before the Cougars’ decisive inning.
Luke Bolka had a three-run homer in the second for a 3-0 lead.
Travis Watkins had an RBI double in the third and ECU (18-15, 0-6 AAC) went ahead 5-2 later in the inning on Jake Washer’s sacrifice fly.
Eric Tyler doubled in the fifth, stole third and scored on a passed ball for a 6-5 Pirates lead.
Jake Scheiner had a two-run single and Corey Julks drove in a pair with a triple in the sixth for Houston (23-8, 4-2).
Watkins was 2-for-4 for ECU as Houston had an 11-8 edge in hits.
Fred Villarreal (1-0) got the win. Matt Bridges (0-2), who walked five in one and two-thirds innings, was charged with the loss.
The Pirates look to end a seven-game losing streak at home against UNC-Wilmington (13-17) on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
