OXFORD, MS — Ole Miss got into East Carolina’s bullpen and rallied for a 3-2 win to take the season-opening series with the Pirates on Saturday before a throng of 11,494 at Swayze Field.
ECU senior left-hander Jacob Wolfe pitched five scoreless innings and left with a 2-0 lead.
Sophomore right-hander Sam Lanier (0-1) came on in the sixth inning and was charged with all three of the Rebels’ runs.
The Pirates (0-2) took a 1-0 lead on a solo home run by Luke Bolka in the second inning.
ECU loaded the bases in the fifth as Bolka walked, Charlie Yorgen had a bunt single and Turner Brown was hit by a pitch. Dwanya Williams-Sutton went down looking before T.J. Rials was hit by a pitch to force in a run for a 2-0 Pirates lead.
Winning pitcher Andy Pagnozzi relieved starter James McArthur and got Eric Tyler to hit into an inning-ending double play.
Colby Bortles homered in the sixth to cut ECU’s lead to 2-1.
Ryan Olenek singled to left field in the seventh and scored on a double by Will Golsan before the Pirates brought in freshman left-hander Jake Agnos.
Golsan got to third on a wild pitch and scored what proved to be the winning run on a sacrifice fly to center by Bortles.
The Pirates had five hits and left five on base. ECU was errorless after committing a pair of miscues in a 5-4 loss on Friday.
Ole Miss (2-0) had nine hits, stranded 10 and made one error.
Wolfe allowed four hits, struck out five and walked three. Agnos didn’t yield a hit in two innings. He had one strikeout and one walk.
Four Ole Miss pitchers totaled nine strikeouts. Will Stokes pitched the ninth for his second save.
Game three of the series is scheduled for 1 p.m. (ET) today.
